During joint investigation team (JIT) findings over the Panama Leaks case, some people started comparing Maryam Nawaz Sharif to Benazir Bhutto. Maryam may be the rising star of Pakistani politics but it is very early to compare her to a political icon like Benazir Bhutto.
Efforts made by Fatima Jinnah and Benazir Bhutto for establishing and making democracy in Pakistan are not comparable in according to Pakistani politics. Fatima, due to her bad health, was unable to fight the people against democracy.
However, Benazir Bhutto was able to fight the dictators of her time. She was able to restore democracy in Pakistan, which is an amazing fact.
Maryam Has Got Some Lucky Political Opportunities
Maryam is fortunate to get the opportunity to take part in the country’s governance on a gold platter. Many people do not receive such chances and opportunities. Benazir fought tooth and nail with General Zia ul Haq for the democracy in Pakistan.
Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto had two sons and two daughters. He was able to see that Benazir was extra ordinary and outstanding. She could gain a strong foothold in Pakistani politics. Therefore, he started her political grooming and also took her to India for the Simla Agreement.
The Bhutto family sacrificed and fought a lot for the sake of democracy. Bhutto was hanged. Benazir and her mother were beaten at numerous protests during the martial law period in the 70s. And last Murtaza Bhutto was killed mysteriously.
Benazir Dealt with Everything So Gracefully
This family suffered a lot. Benazir handled everything very gracefully and never used a word of the foul language. Benazir started her political career when she was only 25-years-old. Maryam could not have even thought of putting herself through the uncertain politics of Pakistan.
Maryam should be admired for trying to follow Benazir’s footsteps but in reality, she needs to come out from under her father’s shadow. She should prove the masses that she is capable of replacing Benazir.
Maryam is slowly and surely climbing many ladders of political success. But she has a long road ahead in perfecting and emulating the political legacy left behind by Benazir.
