There is a chaos in the country after Calibri font documentation produced in a corruption case against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
Calibri font of Microsoft was used to type certified papers naming PM Nawaz’s daughter Maryam Nawaz. They are used as a trustee for several of the ruling family’s high-end London properties. The lush and high-class apartments are at the heart of the case against the Sharif family.
The authorities and the opposition are questioning the legitimacy of funds used to buy them via offshore companies. The documents were at the purpose to show that Maryam.
Who is Nawaz’s presumptive political heir, was only a trustee. But the papers were dated February 2006. According to its creator, a year before the font in which they are typed was in widespread commercial use.
Maryam owns both Nielsen and Nescoll companies. The same conclusion was drawn by a six-member joint investigative team (JIT) tasked by the Supreme Court with examining the corruption claims. JIT had London’s Radley Forensic Document Laboratory to examine and assess the documents.
JIT Rejected the Papers as ‘Falsified’
Earlier this week based on that assessment, the JIT rejected the papers as ‘falsified’ in its final report issued. After the conclusion, social media is filled with jokes and memes. It was widely repeated in the mainstream press.
It is adding fuel to opposition calls for the prime minister to step down. Supporters of Nawaz’s ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) claimed that Calibri has been publicly available since 2004. Microsoft did not instantly react to AFP’s requests for comment.
Lucas De Groot, the font creator told AFP in a statement that it was ‘unlikely’ Calibri had been used in any official documents in 2006. He said that the document in question was produced much later.
De Groot said he started designing Calibri in 2002. He said that he sent the finalized version to Microsoft in 2004. He also said that it was used in beta versions that would have required “serious effort” to obtain.
Calibri Was Available to the Retail by 2007
He said that the first Microsoft product to use Calibri on a large scale was Office 2007. That was available to resellers by November 20, 2006. And that was available for retail by January 30, 2007. He said that “So, in theory, it would have been possible to make a document with Calibri in 2006,”
Maryam, who is a regular Twitter user, has not commented publicly on the Calibri font claim. The corruption controversy revealing the offshore dealings of many of the worlds rich and powerful also has caught Sharif, family.
Nawaz’s four children, his sons Hassan and Hussain and Maryam Nawaz were also implicated in the papers.
The ruling party pressurizes that the wealth used to buy the properties was acquired and gained legally, through family businesses in Pakistan and the Gulf. But the JIT report said there was a “significant disparity” between the prime minister’s income and lifestyle.
The Sharif family has consistently and continuously denied and rejected the allegations against it and rejected the JIT report. The court is considering its next steps and will start deciding what action to take next week.
